Evaluation of Liquid- and Fog-Based Application of Sterilox Hypochlorous Acid Solution for Surface Inactivation of Human Norovirus
Abstract
Noroviruses are a common cause of stomach illness outbreaks, often spreading through contact with dirty surfaces. These viruses are tough, last a long time in the environment, and only need a small amount to make someone sick. Many disinfectants can kill these viruses, but they may be harmful or damage surfaces. This study tested a safer option: a hypochlorous acid (HOCl) solution called Sterilox. Researchers checked how well it worked in water, on surfaces, and as a fog to clean large areas. They tested HOCl on tiles and steel surfaces, using both real norovirus and similar viruses. The results showed that HOCl, even at low levels (20 to 200 ppm), reduced the amount of virus by 99.9% in just 10 minutes. The fog method also worked well, no matter where the surface was placed. The study suggests HOCl could be a safe and effective way to stop norovirus from spreading in public spaces.
