How does HOCl work?
Its biocidal “mode of action”
Mode of action: Oxidative degradation (“burning up”) of biological molecules including;
- proteins leading to conformational damage and loss of functionality,
- Unsaturated fatty acids, oxidation causing membrane damage
- DNA and RNA strand fracture, resulting in disruption to protein synthesis, and enzyme action
Such widespread effects destroy the function of critical structures and disrupt the vital metabolic processes they are responsible for.
Results in death of exposed cells.
Potentially toxic to all cells and tissues but particularly and severely toxic to microbial life.
