Inhalation of Microaerosolized Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl): Biochemical, Antimicrobial, and Pathological Assessment.

Abstract

This study looks at the possible benefits of breathing in a fine mist of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to help prevent and treat infections from respiratory viruses like COVID-19. While not much is known about how safe and effective this treatment is, researchers found that HOCl can quickly kill the COVID-19 virus and even poliovirus, which is harder to destroy. In tests on rats, breathing in a 52 parts-per-million HOCl mist for four hours caused no harm to their lungs compared to rats that didn’t inhale the mist. The study also includes details on the chemical makeup and germ-killing strength of the HOCl mist used during the COVID-19 lockdown. These findings are compared to other studies that also show HOCl mist is safe to inhale and may help fight lung infections. The results suggest that HOCl mist could be a safe, low-cost, and easy-to-use way to fight respiratory infections.
