Comparison of the SARS-CoV-2-inactivating activities of the differently manufactured hypochlorous acid water products with various pH
Abstract
Using good disinfectants is important to stop the spread of COVID-19 (caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus). Hypochlorous acid water (HAW) is known to kill many types of viruses. In earlier studies, a type of HAW called acidic electrolyzed water was found to be very effective against SARS-CoV-2. However, different methods of making HAW result in products with different pH levels. This study tested several HAW products to see how well they killed the virus. The results showed that if the HAW had enough chlorine and was used in the right amount, it could kill the virus effectively no matter the pH level. However, HAW with a pH of 5.0–6.4 kept its strength and effectiveness for 21 days, while products with very low pH (around 3.0 or lower) lost their strength quickly. These findings can help people choose the right kind of HAW depending on how and when it will be used.
Note: This study includes NaDCC.
